Practice Description:
Because of my many years as a litigator, most of my mediation work involves pending litigation, though mediating claims before litigation is often most cost effective. My former firm collected most personal injury verdicts in the tri-county Portland area for at least 20 years, so can be evaluative if requested, though each case stands on its own.
Approach to Practice / Form of Mediation:
I believe the most important part is making sure that each side feels really listened to and understood. The mediation belongs to the parties so I will start out facilitative and only become evaluative if requested or I determine it best to move the mediation forward.
Background:
Native Oregonian; Wilson HS; U of O undergrad; Lewis and Clark law school. Love the outdoors and watching or playing most sports. As a litigator I have tried more than 150 cases to verdict and understand that some cases need to be tried. However, a mediated settlement can provide not only certainty and stress relief, but is also a forum where agreements can be reached that no judge can impose at trial.
Education / Training:
JD 1975; 45+ years as a civil trial lawyer; at least 300 hours of mediation specific training; about 150 meditations; former member of OMA board; current member of Bar ADR board and Multnomah County CLE committee
Fee Information:
Normally $300 an hour for Circuit Court cases; sliding scale for others
